We live in a rural community that is approximately 90% Latino. A large number of our students parents are seasonal agricultural workers. Most of our students are learning English as their second language. For a large majority of our students, their first exposure to books and reading was in kindergarten while learning English. As a result, many of our students at RIS do not love reading. In order to help them see reading as enjoyable, we are going to do a 40 book challenge this coming school year. Students will be asked to read 40 books from a variety of genres to help introduce them to a variety of different texts. In order to keep their interest, we are in need of diverse books for our students to relate too. I believe that many of our students don't see "themselves" in the books they read thus, leading to a dislike of reading. A variety of genres from a set of diverse authors could help our students be more successful and cultivate a love of reading.
