Well rounded readers must be able to read closely and analyze both literature and informational text. Often my learners are disengaged with the text because they must access it through projection or share with a group. Students should be immersed in the text by holding it in their hands and having opportunities to read and reread in order to support understanding of the complexity of themes and connections. Lasky's beautifully illustrated informational text will open the doors to the rainforest in the natural world through the lense of scientists. Students will analyze the structure and function of field guides and field journals, determining what quality field guides and field journals look, and sound like. The text becomes the basis for student research of a living thing of their choice where clear and effective word choice creates their own field report.
