Most of my middle school diverse learners are reading below a 3rd grade reading level which makes it challenging to find engaging books. Also, many of my diverse learners are coming to terms with their sexuality and I want to give my students access to texts that provide both mirrors and windows into the LBGTQ+ community. This collection of books is written at a lower reading level, making them accessible to my students, and they feature characters and situations that embrace and support the LGBTQ+ community. My goal is for my students to be able to read books at their maturity level, even if their reading level is much lower. I also think these books will spark conversation around diversity and inclusiveness, and will help my students develop empathy for those that are different.
