My students attend school in a rough neighborhood in which teenage pregnancy and gangs influence these young adults daily. My Spanish 2 and 3 Honors students are mainly Juniors and Seniors and have made it past the peak drop-out time: sophomore year. They are striving to succeed and eager to learn. They have hopes and dreams stretching from our urban high school to around the world. They laugh, have fun, and desire to be respected and treated as adults. They challenge your thinking and stretch your perspectives. They are eager to learn and make the best with the resources they have available to them. Some consider school like a home: hanging out after hours, warmly welcoming new teachers with a hug, playing basketball in the gym during the summer, and dancing in the courtyards after school. They are lively and loving.
