Each student in the fifth grade are usually given a copy of the scholastic news. A lesson is chosen and students read individually or as a group after which a discussion is held among students. This gives the students a chance to voice their opinion on issues and with doing so, they become confident in speaking. I also use topics from this magazine as a debate topic each week and students do present their work on a Monday. I also use the online books to read aloud for students who are not able to read fluently. Videos are shown if needs be. The comprehension questions are used with standards and this helps a lot. Overall, I do believe that students look forward to using these articles as it stimulates a number of interesting activities among them.
