Students will read the WWI classic All Quiet on the Western Front to see boys their own age experiencing the brutality of war firsthand; this will be followed by The Impossible Knife of Memory, about a family dealing with their father's post-Iraq PTSD. Both novels have main characters close in age to the kids in my class. These texts speak to the population I teach; they can relate to and empathize with these characters, leading them to better understand one another and the experience of war from multiple perspectives. Lessons will include Socratic seminars, character analyses, and current events connections.
