Last year I had a student with a concussion and to help him in recovery, I was asked by the school nurse to dim the lights in my classroom when he was present. For a couple weeks at the end of the year, my 3rd period class would work under dimmed lighting while my other classes experienced the regular full florescent lights. The results were surprising and convincing. Changing the lighting in my classroom changed the mood and work ethic of my students. I saw more focus from that class and a calming nature become the norm. Students who were normally loud and disruptive seemed to reduce their outbursts and their overall noise level. If I ever forget to dim the lights before the class arrived, I was reminded by those 3rd period students. They enjoyed the change in lighting and expressed it. Even after the students concussion was healed the class requested to maintain the change to lighting and we finished the year under that dimmed yet improved lighting. I decided then that alternative lightning would be a priority for all my students.
