I am asking to create a therapeutic space of flexible seating that creates collaboration, community, empowerment and refuge for students who are overcoming extreme life challenges. My students come from varying backgrounds, battling such issues as mental illness and history of abuse and trauma. I want to create a space that helps them gain some control back into their lives, even if it is as simple as seating choice. My students are in need of a setting to help them excel educationally, as well socially and emotionally. It is proven that sensory integration therapy, such as yoga balls, wobble seats, balance boards and a varied seating arrangement can help students who have experienced trauma better regulate their emotions and actions. An inviting setting with couches and comfortable chairs will provide an environment in which they feel welcomed and valued. I have included picture frames to display pictures of the students from our service and adventure trips we go on throughout the year. I want to create a calming and therapuetic learning environment. I want to create a space away from the traditional classroom in which a lot of my students have negative feelings and emotions. I am hoping to create a safe space in which they want come to everyday to learn and grow into productive young men and women who will find self confidence, stability and success.
