Maus is a graphic novel that depicts the story of a Holocaust survivor. The artist uses animals and pictures to tell a survivor's experience. The story deals with dark themes and heavy issues, but presents them in a way that students can access them. The story is gritty and complex, but the medium is approachable and aesthetically pleasing. Despite its high interest and wide accessibility, this novel leaves nothing out, and it is extremely rich for analysis. Thus, I think it will be the perfect introductory text to kick off the school year and get my students excited about reading.
