I want every student to find books that mirror themselves, their experiences, families, and cultures. I want students from underrepresented backgrounds to see themselves in postive ways and affirm their cultural identity. I also want students to identify with characters different from themselves. In order to grow and nurture empathy and understanding, my students must have access to a diverse books, where they are able to relate to the characters on a deeper level. The books I have chosen are just the beginning of incorporating diverse children's literature into my classroom. The list of books include fun series, books that empower and inspire young minds, and picture books the provide familiar or new experiences!
