For many of us, playing on the swings was a favorite way to spend school recess and summer afternoons. If you’re like me, some of your fondest childhood memories likely include a swingset. Unfortunately, it’s often not possible for students with severe and/or multiple disabilities to use a standard playground swing. This project is for a special swing seat and indoor/outdoor swing frame that will allow my blind/visually impaired preschool students to experience all the joy and benefits of playing on a swingset. Swinging provides vestibular stimulation that can help children improve balance, spatial awareness and the ability to catch themselves when off balance, all of which are essential skills for students with visual impairments. Perhaps more importantly, this swing will allow my students to participate alongside their typically sighted classmates, and hopefully create fond memories of their own.
