My students have a lot to learn from Bud. Bud is an orphan in the foster system. Some of my students can relate to this, and if not, can relate to his struggles in seeking a family connection. He is a dynamic character who will engage my students. "Bud, Not Buddy" will allow me to help teach my students about dealing with difficult life events. They learn about the effects of the Great Depression and see what life was like for African American musicians in Michigan. It is imperative to teach my students how to persevere through hardships in life. By having a class set of this book, all of my language arts students will be able to have access to a rich and complex, engaging text.
