The materials requested in my project will directly impact student learning. Our reading curriculum comes with very little "hands-on" materials for active learning. The microscopes will be a hit when learning about insects, the human body, and the cycles of life. I have asked for insect slides to use with the microscope to give students the ability to view up-close and make observations; which will give them a hands-on learning experience. This will take our lessons to the next level and will really increase student engagement. The math manipulatives I have requested will be a great addition to our current curriculum. For example, we teach coins and dollars in second grade. The magnetic coins and dollars will be useful in giving students the tactile experience of adding on and taking away monetary amounts in a whole group setting. Additionally, geometry is a large portion of our math curriculum. The geometry kits will give students a better understanding of each shape and their attributes (sides, vertices, and faces). These items will be sure to increase student engagement and result in higher levels of student understanding and comprehension. As a teacher, it is my duty to give each and every student the tools they need to learn. Sometimes, second graders just need to get their wiggles out. The yoga ball seats will give students the ability to do this without losing focus or becoming distracted. The items I have requested can be multi-purposeful and will be able to be used by lower-level students who need re-teaching, average learners who are learning a new skill, and advanced students to help enrich their learning.
