After attending an Action Based Learning (ABL) seminar, I learned "ABL is designed based on the brain research that supports the link between movement and learning to improved academic performance and behavior." Their website shows compelling research from over 2,000 studies that supports action-based learning. The research shows exercise boost brain function, improves cognition, strengthens memory, prepares the brain to learn, regulates behavior, weakens the effect of poverty, can positively change the brain, and helps alleviate the symptoms of ADHD. The ABL website offers various products to allow for flexible seating, which is too expensive, so with the use of bed risers, some of the desks are elevated and allows the students to stand instead of sitting at a very inexpensive cost. Just in the few weeks since using them in my classroom, my students enjoy being able to move and find they are more attentive in class. For example, I have a male student in my class who is on the possible retention list for next year. It took him the entire math block and his activity time and still hadn't completed a 10 problem division quiz. After allowing him to stand up at desk, he finished within 30 minutes and made a 100! Witnessing his success, seeing my students excited about learning, and being more inattentive in class has convinced me of the positive effects of flexible seating. If my project is funded, the money will be used to purchase bed risers to elevate more of the desks for our fourth grade classrooms.
