My students need literacy materials that spark their imaginations and create intrigue. The wizarding world of Harry Potter offers them a hero in their age range, a reading experience that meets their reading levels, and an opportunity to believe in something more that what meets the eye. As tween-agers they struggle with self-confidence and as struggling readers they have not developed reading confidence. I believe the fantasy and life lessons found throughout the series could increase both, in my classroom. We have a proud, loving community of families and friends even though we are located in a Title 1 school that faces the difficulties of homelessness, poverty and an underserved community. The students' willingness to learn and explore continues to inspire me each day.
