My fifth-grade classroom is a place where students are starting to mature and become more sophisticated readers, writers, and mathematicians! They are being taught strategies that will help them to grow as individuals while they explore chapter books, analyze various forms of text, write on topics that interest them, and connect math strategies to real-world scenarios. From the first day of school, students are introduced to the power of the word "YET", a philosophy that works to instill growth mindset. In this class, the "Power of Yet" has been a powerful strategy that has amplified and supported the love of lifelong learning that I hope to instill in my students. Such a simple reminder to persevere through the rough spots can be the difference between a student who gives up on a problem and one who routinely concludes that understanding will come with more effort, questions, or use of additional strategies.
