I am a bilingual kindergarten teacher in an urban city school. The students in school come from low-income families and most of them receive free lunch. The school also welcome refugee families that contribute with their knowledge and culture. An interesting fact in my school is that over 52% of students are female. My bilingual students embrace their first language Spanish while continue growing in English. They need more books to keep up with their curiosity and develop both languages. My students are always eager to read different literacy genres and contribute with their knowledge and culture at the same time that they learn different subjects in the classroom. It is a challenge to provide books to the students because their curiosity demands are bigger than the books available in the classroom. Especially, when it is time to read during guided reading, independent and share reading, and inquiry projects.
