These amazing pieces of literature will enhance our school's 2nd grade program by helping each child become selfless and empathetic students who practice integrity and high moral standards inside and outside of the classroom. We will study each piece of literature one week at a time, dive deeper into the themes of each book through writing, group conversations about the character values depicted and put these necessary traits into practice in our classroom. I will also publicly recognize students who are putting these values to work and who are being role models for others to emulate. Teaching students their math facts, reading skills, science concepts and test taking stills are important, but teaching them meaningful values to grow and be successful in today's society is absolutely essential. I can't think of a better way to spend my time as a teacher than making a strong impact on the social-emotional welfare of each student I have the privilege of teaching. I want each student to feel loved and cared for and I want them to leave my classroom at the end of the year with strong empathy, courage, respect and speaking up for what's right! Year after year, I strive for a class that shows kindness, works hard, learns from their mistakes, gives generously, shares selflessly, respects others, cares deeply and laughs daily. I believe that some of the strongest and most meaningful life lessons come through beautiful and engaging pieces of children's literature. This would be such a joy to share these works with my wonderful little people. (Every book requested focuses on a character value. I have thoroughly researched each and every title and have carefully chosen the ones that I think will make the biggest impact.)
