Active seating allows students to self-regulate within an instructional and collaborative setting. My students have learned to express when they need a sensory break, and the occurrences of inattention and outbursts have dramatically decreased. These students regularly choose seating that allows for movement that is not distracting, such as stability balls, swivel chairs, and sitting on the floor. This has impacted their learning greatly by optimizing the time spent engaged in instruction and collaboration with peers. Many students who need breaks during instruction often leave the class for a sensory break, or engage in unexpected behaviors that lead to the distribution of their learning and the learning of others. Sensory Integration can be available for EVERY student in the general education classroom. I have the privilege of transitioning from the Levels classroom to teaching 5th grade in the general education setting! I am thrilled that my Levels students will be transitioning into my classroom to begin their new journey in the 2018-2019 school year! As I reflect on the progress the Levels students have made, I believe more students who struggle with ADHD, ADD, and sensory integration disorders can also overcome the challenges they face during instruction. By providing active seating choices these students will be able to use these tools to self-regulate in the classroom, where learning occurs, and not engage in unexpected behaviors that lead to disruption of learning.
