Children are exposed to many worldly things today that affect their self-esteem, which influences the development of their character. Our school is in need of these types of books to open the door for discussions on these topics in the classroom. The collection by Carmela LaVigna Coyle is a series of books for pre-K through third grade that encourages inner beauty and helps the reader find their own hidden treasures. (www.scholastic.com) The reading of these books will not only instill the values emphasized, but also help the students with their reading because they have already heard the book read aloud. For that reason, I would like to have a set available for teachers to check out to read to their class and another set to be available for students to check out from the library so they can read them again on their own. Some of the themes in the books are self-acceptance, follow your dreams, it’s okay to make mistakes when you’re trying something new, a princess lies inside all of us, be yourself, having a positive attitude, and everyday heroes.
