Our 4th grade class of 9 and 10-year-olds are working on building a community based on kindness, respect, persistence, and self-love. It's so important that my students read about characters that display this attributes and it's even more important that these characters represent them. As a Black, male teacher I grew-up without seeing people that looked like me represented in the books I read at school, I want to change that for my students. I've hand-selected and read each and every book on my list. The characters represent all of the cultures in my classroom; Latino, Black and Vietnamese. Malala's Magic Pencil - It only takes one person to make a difference! We're all Wonders - Even though we may look difference or come from a different background we are all amazing! The Name Jar - Our cultures are meaningful and important.
