Enrique's Journey is a powerful account of a boy's journey from Central America to the United States, and provides a tangible human face to the difficult subject of immigration in the US. In my Grade 7 Humanities class, we combine geography, history and sociology. We will be doing a unit on Latin America where we begin with the age of encounter (when the Spanish first came to the new world), and ending at the present era. I want to compare the Spanish migration with the movement of migration today across the Western hemisphere. By reading this book together as a class, we can discuss and debate the causes and impacts of immigration in the United States.
