Every high school art teacher dreams of a 90 minute block period - so much time to get things done! However, in a projects based class, students are seated for unhealthy amounts of time, which is not only bad for their health, but stunts their creativity. Although movement is always built into my lessons, there is no alternative to either sitting or standing once it is time for independent work. I am hoping to provide my computer art students with healthier flexible seating options to promote health, creativity, and to give students who "just can't sit still" an alternative option that allows them to focus on their work instead of their seat! We expect students to "stay in their seat" for hours of their day, forgetting that most conventional chairs are not only uncomfortable, but offer little health support. While many schools across the country are converting to flexible seating options, we simply do not have the funds to do so. The funds donated will go toward exercise ball chairs, bean bag chairs, and stability wobble cushions that could be used to transform our current traditional seating into another flexible seating option! I am hopeful that if funded, these new flexible seating options will allow students explore how they work best, leading to independence and ownership over their own learning.
