I have an Autism Focus program that serves students as at large middle school of over 1200 students. I am trying to create an environment for my students with autism to come to when they need to regroup and calm themselves. Students with Autism have trouble managing sensory input and this environment can be especially challenging at times. When my students need a calm place with low sensory input, they can come to our Safe Zone. The couches, rug, coffee table and lamb will give them a comfortable home like feeling that will help them calm their senses and so they can rejoin their regular education classroom and continue learning. This will also provide an opportunity for students to practice social skills in a more inviting and social area within our classroom.
