Over the past three years I have introduced the Zones of Regulation curriculum to our students at T. school-wide in order to help them regulate their emotions and work through dysregulating situations. It has helped improve our culture as well as increased students' academic engagement in the general education setting because they understand how they're feeling and when they are starting to act in an unexpected way. Our students reference the posters I've created and use some tools such as the breathing strategies and yoga poses the classroom teachers and I have taught them, but those don't meet the needs of every student all the time. My goal is to expand the tools available to students by creating a Chill Zone in each classroom, including our specials (Art, Music, and PE), so that wherever students are, if they are feeling anxious, stressed, or otherwise overwhelmed, there will be a safe place for them to practice the skills we've been working on for the past three years. The Chill Zones will include the posters I've created for prior lessons and tools and visuals that I've made already along with the new materials I'm requesting. It is my hope and belief that between the breathing strategies, yoga poses, and these fidgets, along with a safe, comfortable, designated space, students will be able to calm and rejoin class without needing to leave their classroom and miss valuable instruction.
