I teach special education preschool on the Camp Pendleton Military Base. The students in my classroom have mild/moderate delays and/or disabilities. One of the unique aspects of my classroom is the fact that most of my students have one parent deployed, so that offers additional challenges for all students. The majority of the students in my classroom have Autism, a Speech and Language Impairment or ADD/ADHD. I have the unique privilege of selecting typically developing peers to act as peer buddies in my classroom. My goal for my preschool classroom is to have it function as closely to a general education preschool classroom as possible. I have to purchase most of the classroom supplies and toys for play based instruction. Some benefits of play-based instruction are: it is usually voluntary, and intrinsically motivating, that is, it is pleasurable for its own sake and is not dependent on external rewards.
