A colleague of mine read about the use of vertical whiteboards in the math classroom and tried it out this past year and had a lot of success. With vertical whiteboards and random grouping, students stayed focused and on task longer. Student engagement and communication with each other about math increased as well. Students knew that whoever had the marker was just the recorder. The person without the marker had to explain their mathematical thinking and tell the person with the marker how to solve the problem and what to write down. I am very excited to implement this instructional strategy next year in my Algebra 1 classes. I would like to use magnetic whiteboards so that students can also use magnetic algebra tiles as manipulatives to help them solve equations.
