The students that I work with utilize augmentative and alternative communication (ACC) to communicate. For many of my students, this looks like the exchange of pictures or the use of an iPad with a communication application. These learners are focusing on the use of core vocabulary in order to establish functional communication within the educational setting. Core vocabulary refers to the words that make up 80% of spoken language. These students have been introduced to core vocabulary over the last year, and we have already seen drastic changes in each student's communication at school. Kids learn language contextually and through experience - This statement is especially true for children who utilize AAC, because experiences make language motivating and meaningful! My goal is to create a space in our school where these students can be completely immersed in core vocabulary. I plan to create a library with developmentally appropriate literature that focuses on core vocabulary words. I also plan to create task boxes with interactive materials that focus on each word (e.g. the use of various containers as temptation tasks, so that students are required to ask for "help"). I aim to create language themed sensory bins, and visuals to bring core vocabulary to light throughout the classroom. My wish list contains what may seem to be an odd array of materials; however, each has been specifically selected with a purpose. These materials will allow my students to be engaged throughout the day, motivate them to use targeted vocabulary, and support their ability to communicate utilizing augmentative and alternative communication. My students have so much to say and so much to learn. Please consider donating to help me show them how incredibly powerful their voices can be!
