In a bilingual classroom, communication between peers and strong relationships are essential. These connections motivate students to practice both English and Spanish, recognize the strengths of their classmates, and, ultimately, build social-emotional skills that will last a lifetime. Ideas around language, culture and identity are already beginning to form in our first graders. Knowing that, I would like to provide my students with the opportunity to play together, as one way to facilitate social-emotional growth and communication between students in my classroom. Starting each day with ‘morning bins’ invites the students into the classroom through low-risk, high-interest activities. In working with many materials such as Tinker Toys, Brain Flakes and Magnetic tiles my first graders will be engaged in practicing social skills while building together. The Create-A-Scene toys and figures give students a chance to pretend and create dialogue through characters using different settings. I am so excited to give my students this chance to connect with their peers through play.
