Many of my students are not eager readers; but what I discovered last year is that they will read books that engage their interests, that speak to their lives. I watched a group of 16- and 17-year-old boys sit around and popcorn read Jason Reynolds' Long Way Down -- and not just read it once, but re-read it again and again. They discussed it in-depth; they argued over what the ending meant, who the characters really were, what really happened in the book. For an entire month, they were totally engaged with a book -- students who had told me before they started that they didn't really like to read. For many of our students, there is not much in their own lives that they get to control; this year I want to make their reading even more relevant by giving them individual choice -- control over what they read.
