Teaching at an inner city school for the past 6 years have been more rewarding and humbling than I ever though possible. I grew up in the district I teach at, but it was very different way back then. Some of my kids have experienced things I can't even begin to understand. Yet, they come to school (usually) with a smile on their face. It's very hard for me to describe my classroom as a classroom. To me, it isn't just a classroom; it's where my kids start to discover who they are or can become. It is where we learn about cells, Newton's Laws, and the Universe; we perform experiments and create different class projects. But, my classroom isn't just a room I teach in. I also council kids who have a horrendous home life; I encourage students to work out issues without using violence; I hug students and tell them, "I love you" when they are having a bad day. My classroom isn't JUST a classroom, it's my kids' safe place.
