My students are in the beginning stages of their first service learning project of the year. Our focus is on Sustainable Development Goal #1 to End poverty in all its forms everywhere and #2 Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This book was written in 1931 when the social system in Asia was a cast system yet the expectation was that men would have a mistress even though families would be in poverty. Students will learn about the significance of tea for status and comfort, both from the text and personal experience. Students will be developing social emotional skills for social awareness and the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. These resources will help students embark on their project based learning journey to advocate for others and bring awareness to inadequacies with gender equality and the faces of poverty.
