Students with special needs can benefit from alternate active seating which allows them to move their body as they work. My classroom currently has large, heavy wooden "library chairs" for students to sit on. These chairs are heavy and bulky and difficult for the students to move. We also have large plastic chairs, sized for 4th and 5th grade students. These chairs are much too large for my students. In addition to having an intellectual disability, all of the students in this classroom have ADD, ADHD, or autism. Keeping a child’s attention on their class work can be difficult for any teacher. Doing so when that child is autistic, or has ADHD/ ADD or some other disability can be even more challenging. Most students with disabilities have decreased muscle tone and a constant need for movement-based sensory input that contributes to fidgeting, slouching or soreness, making it tough for them to stay engaged. My goal is for each student to work independently for short periods of time. It’s amazing to see the effects of proper positioning on a child’s ability to learn. I'd love to provide many options to gain the best alignment and postural control possible so that my kids can focus on developing and coordinating arm and hand skills. The wiggle seats can be placed on the carpet during oral language/ discussion time as well.
