In a large city with tens of thousands of students it's difficult to find funding for simple things like books. Finding modern, relevant literature for my students can be a struggle. Both "The Handmaid's Tale" and "The Sympathizer" are important novels that reflect our times, something high schoolers in 2020 need to experience in their education. I want my students to see that art reflects life. In a diverse city like Worcester, with a large immigrant population, it is important for my students to recognize that their struggles are accurately represented in what they read. These novels will help make my students lifelong readers by providing modern spins on important, historic tales of oppression.
