My students will start the year with group challenges: building the tallest marshmallow tower, stacking the most sugar cubes (blindfolded) following the commands of a sighted lab partner. Our test scores show that they are weak in spatial reasoning and problem solving strategies. The Soma cubes, Dots Game, Q-bitz, and Gravity Marble Maze will give my students fun challenges while improving both their spatial reasoning and problem solving ability. Students will learn to collaborate and communicate with their lab partners as they solve the challenges. Later in the year, it will also be a productive, motivating activity for students who finish the classwork ahead of their peers.
