The books are part of a long term project to curate classroom book clubs driven by choice. My kids need to talk about books, share books, find books that resonate with them, learn about others through books, and develop into life long readers. The list of the books contains a connection for every one of my readers. The selected titles encompass experiences from around the world, harrowing tales from the past, narrative non-fiction, novels that spark heated debate, and books even the most reluctant reader will devour. These titles are tried and true. My students will use these titles to write book reviews for our school library. Imagine reading a review created by your best friend, by the kid who you admire, or by the kid you never understood. This variety of diverse books and genres, as well as written reviews will create connections for readers. Reading and writing reviews about the common experiences of those fleeing hardships in Alan Gratz's novel Refugee will foster empathy and will create a window into the past and the present. These books clubs and reviews will build bridges, change lives, and inspire readers.
