The plan is to create an entire unit around the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. I want to create something interactive and hands on that goes along with the action and adventure of swashbuckling pirates. In this unit, we're going to cover character development, pirate history, nautical terminology, and geography - to name a few things. I want this to be a cross-curricular unit that involves science (oceans and climates), social studies (historical context of 18th century pirates), and math (map plotting and coordinate planes). Ideally, by the end of the unit students will be able to see that all subjects and disciplines can blend together to create something both fun and educational. And we will definitely be dressing up and using pirate accents at some point!
