Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates a child's senses. Sensory activities facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore. Sensory activities aid in the development of small children by getting children to use all 5 senses. Sensory activities can take the form of activities in a sensory table such as sand and water. It can take the form of table top activities such as putty, scented play dough and aqua beads. Sensory activities can take the form of edible activities, scented activities and various textured activities. Many children diagnosed with autism or sensory processing disorder struggle with various sensory stimuli. For example, loud noises, strong scents and textures or tastes of foods. Exposure to a variety of sensory based activities is imperative for all children but especially for those on the autism spectrum and those with attention deficit disorder. The benefits of sensory based activities are many. They assist in developing fine motor skills, cognitive skills, language acquisition and help children to develop socially and emotionally. These activities assist in helping children to relax and self regulate, an imperative skill for children in a school environment but also for children exposed to trauma and neglect in the home. Your contribution to our children will assist us in addressing these critical needs in our students.
