The students I service during reading intervention blocks will eagerly respond to the contrast of the neon letters on the black background and the novelty of the medium will excite my students and accelerate their learning! Neuroscience research related to teaching and learning support that these materials coincide with student motivation and brain development. One of the daily activities that helps my students is breaking words into known parts. We use colorful foam magnet letters to 'break' words into parts such as br-ing. Then we practice writing the words and word parts on dry erase boards. This engages numerous parts of the brain and forms connections that encourage them to apply the skill to other unknown words. Finally, we locate the words in the texts they are reading to solidify the connections in their brains and boost their confidence.
