The students will be using their knowledge of polyhedra, angles, and scale to create lanterns that will be applied to the light string. The polyhedra will be scale models the students will create by applying tissue paper with ModPodge and using wooden dowels. These light strings will then be auctioned off to raise money for the charity the students choose to support. This hands-on activity helps the students apply the basic concepts of geometry to a real-world situation. They must be able to calculate and measure the degrees of the polygons that make up the polyhedra. They must use scale factor to create the polyhedra of the correct size to fit the light string. They must also use teamwork to design the light string and research charities in our community. The students are excited about this project and cannot wait to begin.
