The coffee shop helps students learn valuable work skills needed for their paid employment experiences out in the community. They learn how to run a cash register, customer service skills, how to wash dishes in a industrial sink, baking and cooking skills, sanitation regulations, and most important teamwork. They also learn how to make a shopping list, budget for their shopping trip, and shop for the items needed at the grocery store. The coffee shop is used daily and we have acquired some items needed for it throughout the years it has been open. This year we have been making and selling more food and we are in need of some preparation and cooking items to keep up with the demand. We currently have one stainless steel prep table but it is not big enough to prepare all of the items we sell in the coffee shop. We are in need of another stainless steel preparation table that can be sanitized. We also have two ovens, one of which the stove top burners no longer work. We usually need both cooking surfaces when making the family size meals due to the amount we have to cook. Our knives are approximately ten years old or more and were originally donated or purchased at a thrift store. We also need some baking supplies such as spatulas, mixing bowls, frying pans, and children’s cookbooks. Imagine how beneficial it is for students with different learning disabilities and other special needs to learn a job in a controlled environment before having to go out into the community. They will be more confident in knowing what is expected of them and how to do different tasks related to the job. While learning these skills they are also learning how to become more independent.
