My students love stories and adventures, but they have minimal access to amazing books. Below average reading skills create yet another barrier to their accessing swashbuckling narratives. A class set of the book Divergent would help students cultivate not just their academic skills, but also a life-long love of reading. The art of getting lost in a book is dying as video games and Snapchat become students' only source of text; these books will blast open kids' imaginations and inspire them to take ownership of their own literacy and literary adventures. The composition books will play a vital role both academically and socially. Students will spend Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays summarizing, analyzing, and arguing about the week's reading in their journals. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be reserved for personal journal entries. Middle school is hard, and the perfect time to begin honing the more advanced social skills that come with reflection, introspection, and practiced communication. These composition books will help students advance academically and will support their social-emotional growth as they enter the quagmire of puberty.
