My students have very few items in their lives that belong just to them. If they each own their own sketchbook they will be able to express their own ideas and take ownership of their creativity. Many of my students do not see the value of art in their lives because of their backgrounds. When a child can take ownership of their ideas they unlock the creativity that is in all of them. I use sketchbooks to teach drawing skills through guided drawing. In addition, students independently use their sketchbooks to bring their ideas to life. At the end of the school year, they will be able to take their sketchbooks with them.
