My students love reading stories that are applicable to real life, ones they can make connections to in the real world. Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes is a great novel for students to make connections to the world we are living in today. Since the book is realistic fiction, I hope to pair the novel with informational and historical texts, so students can analyze the parallels between what's happening currently and what's happened throughout history. Ghost Boys is a culturally relevant and responsive novel that my students are hungry for. Also, it is not often my school can get a book written within the last two years. My students will love its relevance and that it is a timely book.
