Flexible seating would allow my room to have the freedom and individuality that my students deserve. As a teacher of juniors in high school, I often give broad assignments that allow students to have choice and freedom. My students are reading and writing everyday, and a classroom that offers options in seating will allow them to more easily move and focus. My room is constantly changing configurations on a regular basis and it's not unusual to see students reading on my counter or on the floor, standing at my podium to write, or pacing to practice a speech. On the days that they are free to move and work in their own style there is more focus, more powerful products, and more joy. If I could offer choice to them everyday, they would improve and grow at such a high rate because they are taking control of what works best for them. Just as they will in college and as adults. The stools will offer more seating at the counter space. Bean bags will allow more seating on the ground. Often projects and drafts are left on my counter, so the storage containers will hold their projects and works-in-progress. Along with flexible seating, I want to foster a creative environment, so the markers/crayons/paper will help allow for more creative projects and presentations. The exercise balls will serve as alternative seating for desks. They allow the kids who like to move more options that will help keep them focused. Finally the cell phone chart holder will be used to create a little more order and help students stay off their phones. Flexible seating doesn't mean time to lounge, the seating and organization have been chosen by me and my students to best support their learning.
