"I will breathe. I will think of solutions. I will not let my worry control me. I will not let my stress level break me. I will simply breathe and it will be okay because I don't quit."- Shayne McClendon. As a school psychologist for over 24 years in my elementary school, I have seen many deficits in the abilities that students have to self-regulate their emotions. The students in my school will benefit from the use of a "Calming Box" in each of our 24 classrooms. Within the calming box will be sensory tools (such as putty, PlayDoh, beads, pipe cleaners, etc.) and other various supplies to help the students calm themselves down in a safe and supported way within the classroom setting. Helpful phrases and positive strategies will also be posted in order to assist the students to learn the calming down skills independently. For those students who need a little "extra" assistance, our school will have a "Calm Down Corridor" set up in a hallway that is quiet, yet easily accessible to all students, regardless of age or physical abilities. This hallway will be set up with it's own Calming Box, as well as an obstacle course through which a supervised child can work off energy and emotions that may feel overwhelming. The obstacle course will be made up of line mazes for the students to follow with their bodies, as well as a wall push area, modified hopscotch, "heavy work" (with a weighted ball), and ending with a trip to the water fountain before heading back to class to work.
