Math is beautiful. Too many students in middle school become disinvested in math because all of the interactive and engaging strategies they used in elementary school disappear! Students find that math becomes less about exploring new ideas and more about memorizing a set of facts. Funding this project will help to change that, and help students develop a love of math that will stay with them well through their secondary years of education. This project includes a range of manipulatives that students will use starting on day one in the classroom. Equation tiles to help students balance equations and begin thinking algebraically; decimal place cards and tiles so students can grapple with complex numbers; factor triangles so students can visualize prime factorization; pattern blocks to help students reason through functions; decimals, percent, fraction circles so students will enjoy working and learning about fractions and relationships between numbers; tangrams so students will effectively reason about area and how to decompose complex shapes into more manageable ones. I have seen how giving students the opportunity to learn visually, kinesthetically, and auditorily, helps them to make better sense of new knowledge and ideas. I have also seen the importance of allowing students choice in how the tackle problems! I want my students to have the ability to choose what strategies work best for them, and that can only be done if they have the materials to do so.
