The right supplies have the power to change school from something you are required to do to something you are proud to be a part of. Imagine you are completing a final project for a novel your class spent several weeks examining. Your project involves an essay and a visal (such as a drawing or collage) that shows a character's reaction to a setting, situation, or theme in the text. Sure, you could do this with a notebook and a pencil, but with the right supplies - markers, glue, scissors, paper - you can create something you engage with and have pride in, as opposed to something that just gets the job done. For students with special needs, school can be even more challenging than for the average student. It can often be embarrassing for students who feel they are not as smart or able as their peers. Equipping a classroom with the right supplies can make a difference. Having chart paper and colored pencils can turn annotating text from something daunting for struggling readers into an interactive and creative outlet, resulting in a product that can be displayed in the room. Having binders, pens/pencils, and other on hand and ensure no student is limited due to lack of access to supplies. As I set up my room for next year, I want to ensure that my students feel privileged and provided for. I want to room to reflect their limitless potential.
