I have recently taken over a set of reading intervention classes that have a series of subs since January. During this time, the students have been asked to complete a series of worksheets. With only two months left in the semester I want to awaken students love for reading. The Crossover, is a book that can do just that. As Marilyn Singer wrote, "A basketball novel, yes, but also a story of family, dedication, loyalty, loss, and redemption wrapped up in a slam dunk of powerful language." My students have been deprived for months of powerful and meaningful words. By building my unit around this novel I hope to expose students to the power of words and story. Then as a culminating task I will challenge student to write and share their own stories. Ultimately, I believe the way Kwame Alexander uses language will inspire my students to do the same. So when I say, we still have time for one shot. This is it. It's time to change their view of reading as a chore, to a tool for powerful expression. So please give what you can so I can give these neglected students what they deserve, a relevant and thoughtful educational experience.
