My goal is to reinvigorate and instill in students a life-long love for reading and help them appreciate the many benefits it affords them not only now, but after they enter the workforce. First, I plan to share with them statistics and research studies on the positive benefits of reading. Next, I want to match students with books that interest them and are related to their programs of study. Lastly, I plan to incorporate designated times for fellow staff, students, and me to all read silently our self-selected books. The more we as teachers model and provide time for students to read, the better chance we have to get them hooked. Working with students on employability skills at a CATE (Career and Technology Education) center, I see the great need to encourage independent reading skills to ensure future success in the workplace. Although some of our students will continue on to higher education, many of our students are headed straight into the workforce. For them, this may be the last opportunity we have to instill an appreciation for the importance of reading. Most of our instructors are from industry backgrounds and are understandably focused mainly on their crafts and trades, which requires more informational reading. I want to use high interest fiction novels and biographies as well as informational books and magazines that relate to our programs to connect students with books that will promote in them a life-long enjoyment of reading. As we serve students from two local high schools, no media center is provided for the students at our location. My vision is to first create a small reading center accessible to students and teachers and eventually help teachers create their own classroom libraries.
